What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise program started by
Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago. It consists of of a
series of yoga-based exercises that stretch and strengthen
muscles. Focus is on strengthening the “core”, made up of
the muscles of the abdominals, lower back, hips and
buttocks.
What can Pilates do for
me?
There are infinite benefits of Pilates. They include:
reduction of lower back pain, slims midsection, tones
muscles, strengthens abdominals, helps balance, improves
posture, stretches tight muscles, strengthens weak muscles,
improves mind/body connection, and much more!
What can I expect from Pilates?
Pilates said that “in 10 sessions you’ll feel the
difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30
you’ll have a whole new body.” Pilates can slim, tone, and
stretch. It can reduce aches and pains. It can provide a
greater sense of well being. But in order to achieve
effective results, a commitment of at least one class a
week is suggested.
How will I feel after a session?
Pilates never believed in working to the point
of exhaustion. The exercises are designed to help the body,
not tire it. After a session, Pilates clients generally
feel energized, stretched, and better in
general.
Is Pilates “difficult”?
Pilates exercises can be modified for all
levels, from Beginner to Advanced. Each exercise utilizes
every part of the body, and in that sense, is a workout.
However, it should not feel overwhelming. A beginner should
have no problem doing the exercises. Exercises should be
performed at the client’s own pace and fitness
level.
What do I need for a
mat session?
Comfortable clothes (like you would wear in a yoga class),
a soft mat to lie on, and water. Shoes and socks are not
worn during the session.
